Developed as a more direct way to curb drunk driving, alcohol sensors similar to Breathalyzers have been downsized to fit on the dashboard of any automobile. Upon a DUI conviction a judge may order the offender have the device installed on their vehicle. The ignition interlock installation and service is almost always paid by the driver.
How does it work?
Before the vehicle will start the driver is prompted to blow into the analyzer. If the sensor detects an elevated blood alcohol level (typically .02 or .04) the vehicle will not start. To avoid sober non-drivers from blowing into the device and allowing an intoxicated individual to operate the vehicle, the interlock requires the driver to provide samples randomly throughout driving. In the event a driver generates an elevated reading while driving, the vehicle will flash lights or honk the horn until the ignition is turned off. Simply shutting down the vehicle could be dangerous to others on the highway.
What kind of maintenance does an ignition interlock require?
Service generally takes place every 30, 60 or 90 days. During which the sensor is calibrated and a log of the driver’s activity can be printed or downloaded for analysis. Any breath test failures that are logged can mean further driving limitations.
How accurate are the readings?
While not nearly as accurate as breath analyzing machines used by law enforcement, their readings are relatively reliable assuming the device is calibrated accurately and often. It is important to speak with a DUI attorney regarding any readings you believe are false.
Is it a driving distraction?
This is a fair and relevant question regarding the use of ignition interlock devices. A sensor requiring the user to stop thinking about driving, and think about satisfying the device’s request, is a clear distraction. It is still undecided how much safety an ignition interlock brings to the roadways. Regardless, as a result of anti-drunk driving pressure groups influencing politicians, you can expect their presence to only increase in the coming years.
Will I be required to have an ignition interlock installed on my car?
It is important to present your specific situation to a qualified DUI attorney. They will explain how the law works and lead you in the right direction. With their help you may be able to avoid the use of an ignition interlock, driving sanctions, or even have your charges totally dismissed!
