DUI Schools

Throughout the United States, many courts are now establishing mandatory attendance of DUI schools for those convicted of driving under the influence. Whether you and your attorney decide to enter into a plea bargain with the state or you are sentenced to attend DUI school, there are some pros and cons you should know about.
Depending on where you live, the court may reduce your penalties and/or sentence if you successfully complete DUI school. Another positive to completing such course work is that it can reduce the number of points placed on your driver’s license from your DUI conviction. As a result, you may have your driving privileges reinstated sooner and your insurance carrier may lower your rates. Another reason to consider DUI school is that it can reduce your fines.
However, while it can save you money in some ways, it is going to cost you money, too. The cost really depends on the severity of your conviction and what the program entails. Time is another disadvantage – many states have set the minimum time requirements to 12 hours. Your class may last one day or for a few partial days depending on your jurisdiction.
What are the requirements of DUI school?
If you have previous DUI convictions or you were convicted of a felony, your requirements will be less lenient then if you were a first-time offender. If you have already taken the course and have prior DUI convictions, the court may decide not to grant you the option of DUI school.
Where do I go to complete the class?
There are different options but most are held in-person in an educational environment. Some can be completed over the Internet, through the mail or even by video. Of course the goal of the class is to educate you on the effects that alcohol and/or drugs have on a person’s body. You may have to visit a morgue, hospital or see images of alcohol-related accidents as a way of showing you the harsh consequences of drinking and driving.
