Inside the court room you’re facing a slue of penalties including high fees, loss of your driver’s license and possible jail time. But outside the courtroom you’re facing consequences, too – and one of those is insurance coverage problems. A DUI conviction is the final nail in the coffin when it comes to your vehicle’s insurance.

That’s because drunk drivers are a very high-risk for insurance company to insure and can cost them a lot of money. To protect themselves, they drop you or increase your insurance rates until they’re sky high just to keep your vehicles covered. Usually, insurance companies will check your driving record once every three years or when you apply for a new policy.

There is the chance that your DUI conviction, traffic ticket or accident can escape your insurance’s attention. But when they do find it on your driving record, they will handle it in one of two ways. They may increase your insurance premiums and label you a high-risk driver. Your auto insurance carrier may just decide to cancel your insurance policy. They may cancel it mid-term or at the end of your term. However, your attorney will know if your state does not allow your insurance carrier to drop your policy in the middle of a term even for a DUI conviction. If you find yourself in this situation, it’s best to shop around in order to find the lowest insurance rates.

You will be notified by mail that your policy will be canceled and for what reason. Keep in mind when you’re looking for another insurance carrier your claims history will be made available and a DUI conviction will be on your driving record.

Most likely, you won’t be able to hide your DUI conviction from your insurance company because most states require you to get an SR-22 form from them. Your insurance carrier may also have to submit this form to your state’s DMV, which will remove your license suspension by proving that you have insurance. Your insurance company is also required to notify the DMV if it decides to cancel your insurance for any reason.
